we accept enrolments from july onwards and encourage you to enrol at the earliest opportunity.

Having a firm idea of the number of enrollments we are expecting for the coming academic year allows us plenty of time to put in place the resourcing and staffing to best serve our tamariki and community.

Zoning

In Zone

You have automatic right of enrolment at Kowhai if you live in our zone. Follow this link to see a list of the streets in the Kowhai zone.
Entry to our Maori unit and Samoan bilingual class is by application.

Please telephone Kathrine Laurence on 846-7534 or email [email protected] should you require more information.

Out of Zone (for 2020 academic year)

Out of zone enrolments close on Wednesday 4 September 2019 and the ballot takes place on Wednesday 11 September 2019.

Each year the school will analyse the projected in-zone enrolment figures and decide on how many places we can offer to students who live outside our zone.  If we receive more applications than we have places we will conduct a ballot to select these students. All out of zone applications must be received before the deadline, Wednesday 4 September. There are Ministry of Education rules and guidelines about how this process is run - you can read more about them here. * Our Maori and Samoan language classes qualify as 'special programmes' under these guidelines.

If your child is accepted via the ballot please let us know as soon as possible if you will take up the offer. We start planning for staffing and resources well before 2020 so we require firm numbers on our 2020 roll. There is a waiting list for those whose names were not drawn from the ballot so any placement not taken up will be offered to another student.

Advice for new students…

We know that starting a new school is really exciting and but you may feel a little anxious about it as well - that’s entirely normal and ok! We asked students who are at Kowhai and also those that have moved onto to high school what advice they would give to students about to come to Kowhai and this is what they said:

What advice would you give to the future students to help them transition to intermediate school?

  • Don’t overthink it

  • Change is scary but good

  • Make new friends, put yourself out there

  • “I made more new friends at [intermediate] in one term than I did in all of year 6 at my primary.”

  • Learn to manage time and be flexible.

  • You need to be able to manage yourself

  • Ask your parents to show you around

  • Be responsible for your actions

  • Avoid drama, sort it and move on

  • Learn to work with lots of different people

  • Don’t be afraid to come out of your comfort zone

  • Make the first move- introduce yourself

Remember that your teachers are there to support you and walk alongside you as you work on developing these skills - don’t worry - you will have lots of time and opportunity to do this.

Certainly one of the best things about intermediate is seeing just how far our students grow and mature in their personal, academic and emotional development over the 2 years.

What can friends and whanau can do to help?

  • Talk to students who have gone to that school (siblings, friends, friends of siblings)

  • Visit the school when its closed, walk around and familiarise.

  • Practice the transport route

  • Help with checklists of routines

  • Speak resilience (believe I can cope)

  • Encourage me to get involved

  • Give me new responsibility
