Waterpolo

Kowhai had two teams, both mixed, who we split into an A and B...

A few words about Kowhai A...

We ended the season in second place after a nail biting final match against Balmoral in front of the largest group of supporters we'd had. We were tied at the end of the third quarter 4-4, but couldn't quite hold them off in the last minutes of the game.

The team played amazing waterpolo, there was great passing, superb defence and examples of composure and performance under pressure. This was the toughest 20 minutes of our season, all players gave it 100% and had nothing left at the end. Whilst we lost this last game, we did so with our heads held high, knowing that we had been fairly beaten by a team that was just a little bit better than us on the day. The team were great sports, they held their heads high at the end, handled themselves with grace, and we also celebrated our Silver as a great achievement for the team and for Kowhai.

In our weekly training sessions all the players trained together, often playing against one another. So the A team owe the B team a vote of thanks.  Through our duels against each other on a Sunday afternoon the A team got a 'workout' that we wouldn't have got otherwise!

Kowhai B also had a great season – placing 7^th out of 24 teams in the grade. We had some seasoned veterans and some complete novices but the team pulled as one. After decimating our opposition in grading we were placed in the same pool as Kowhai A, where we faced some challenging games. Our final quarter of the season was our best and we snatched a brilliantly executed victory against Marist.

Waterpolo is a tough sport. All the students demonstrated a big lift in fitness over the season, much improved skills and team working, and all showed grit, courage and resilience as they needed to 'dig deep' on many occasions during the season to find that 'something extra'
